DC Scholars C.A.R.E. Program

What is the DC Scholars C.A.R.E. Pogram?

The DC Scholars C.A.R.E. Program supports families identified as a part of the McKinney-Vento program or identified as needing resources and support that enable them to attend and access all school programs.

CConnect with Compassion: DC Scholars staff build trusting relationships with MKV families, ensuring they feel welcomed, understood, and supported in their unique situations.

AAdvocate for Access: DC Scholars staff advocate for the immediate enrollment of MKV students, ensuring they receive equitable access to all school programs, services, and resources without barriers.

RRespond with Resources: DC Scholars provides MKV families with necessary support, from transportation and meals to academic and social-emotional services, responding to their needs promptly and efficiently.

EEmpower through Education: DC Scholars staff empower MKV students and families by offering continuous educational stability, academic support, and opportunities that allow them to thrive and succeed despite housing challenges.

Who Qualifies?

Your child may qualify for DC Scholars C.A.R.E Program if your family is:

- Living in a shelter, motel, or campground

- Sharing housing with others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons

- Living in a car, park, public space, abandoned building, or other inadequate accommodations

- Experiencing temporary housing due to domestic violence or similar situations

What is the McKinney-Vento Act?

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures all children and youth experiencing homelessness have access to a free, appropriate public education. It removes barriers that might prevent students from enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school.

In most cases, this is directly certified by OSSE which helps us to know who you are in advance. Receiving TANF or SNAP is not an automatic qualifier.
