About DC Scholars
Our Mission
DC Scholars develops life-long scholars who have the academic knowledge and skills, individual passions, and community-mindedness necessary to succeed in and contribute to an ever changing world.
Our History
Opened in 2012 as a PK-3 public charter school in DC’s Ward 7, DC Scholars now serves grades PK3-8 while sustaining strong academic achievement. Our school delivers rigorous instruction, serves as a community of joy where students thrive, and embeds the expectation that scholars can – and will – achieve academic success.
Our Three Core Pillars
Academic Knowledge and Skills
DC Scholars offers rigorous academic programming supplemented with research-based small group interventions and High Impact Tutoring (HIT).
Individual Passions
True scholars are well-rounded. At DC Scholars, students have the opportunity to explore their individual passions through specials subjects (Art, Dance, P.E./Health, Spanish); extracurricular programming ( athletics, chess, biking, gardening, etc.); and field trips.
Community Mindness
As a PS-8 community school, DC Scholars develops young children in a caring, close-knit community. We offer daily socio-emotional skills lessons to build students emotional intelligence and collaboration skills.
We extend support beyond the classroom through comprehensive partnerships that serve our students and families:
Health & Wellness:
Love and Carrots, Soccer Shots
Community Support:
Joyful Market, Flamboyan Foundation
Enrichment:
Change Summer, Girls In Gear
Community School Partnerships

Our Approach to Learning
Rigorous Instruction
All scholars experience meaningful and joyful learning opportunities that equip them with the knowledge base and critical thinking skills to become lifelong learners and compassionate, responsible members of our broader world.
Small Groups
DC Scholars accelerates the learning of every child. In addition to its high quality curriculum, DC Scholars offers daily small learning groups and high impact tutoring to provide each child with the academic support and caring encouragement they need to thrive.
Socio-emotional Learning
Every day, students begin the day with an interactive social skills lesson led by their homeroom teacher.
Beyond the Classroom
Our comprehensive extracurricular program develops leadership and builds community through activities including:
Cheerleading and Basketball
Student Government
National Junior Honor Society
Yearbook and Coding Clubs
Chess Club
Our Commitment
At DC Scholars, we're proud to serve the Ward 7 community by putting students on the PATH to college while providing them with essential life skills. We believe in the potential of every child and are dedicated to nurturing confident, capable scholars ready to make their mark on the world.
